Obituary for Wayne Alvin Pennock

Wayne Alvin Pennock, 92, of Gardner, KS passed away Dec. 9, 2019. Cremation. Graveside service and inurnment 3:30 pm Fri., Dec. 13, 2019 with Military Honors at Lawrence Memorial Park Cemetery, 1517 E. 15th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044. Wayne was born July 23, 1927 in Lincoln, NE to Roy O. and Leora (Rentfrow) Pennock. In 1931 his family moved to KC when his father took a manager position at Riggs Optical. Wayne attended Paseo High School and started in the Optical Business in 1942 as a mail clerk for Riggs. Except for time in the service in WWII and Korea with the Merchant Marines (1944-1948) and training with the 101st Airborne (1951) he remained with Riggs and Bausch and Lomb until 1956. He began dispensing in Lansing Michigan and also worked in Cedar Rapids, Iowa before moving to KC in 1965 to join his father at KC Optical. Wayne sold Pennock Opticians in Overland Park, KS in 1988 and moved to North Ft. Meyers, Florida for 15 years. He moved to Gardner, Kansas in 2005.

Wayne was a member of the Missouri Optical Assoc. and became certified in 1971. He served as a Board Member and President of the Missouri Optical Assoc. and Board Member of the Southwestern Optical Dispensary. He launched the school program at Metropolitan Jr. College. He was a 45 year member of the Lions Club, joining in 1961 and maintaining 100% attendance until retiring in 2005. Wayne held club offices in several of the clubs and chartered three clubs in different cities. He served as President and District Sight Chairman. Wayne also served as an Overland Park City Councilman from April 1981 – April 1983.

Wayne had many hobbies including golf, yard work, gardening, “tinkering” around the house, handyman, cooking (especially baking), putting together models, making airplanes out of pop cans, traveling, dancing and reading.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters: Waunita and Eileen. Wayne is survived by his wife of 38 years, Darlene Pennock. Other survivors include his four children: Terri Danner (Gary), Raytown, MO, Scott Pennock, Statesville, NC, Lorri Coey, Champaign, IL, Vicki Pennock, Bend, OR; two stepchildren: Shara Lyn Epps (Reggie), Olathe, KS and Barry Lee Campbell, Osawatomie, KS. He also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and a niece Gloria Turntine (Don), KC, MO.
