Virginia Petersen Flanagan, 89, Olathe, Kansas, formally of Spring Hill, Kansas passed away Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, Kansas. Celebration of Life will be at 1:00 p.m Friday, March 26, 2021 at Bruce Funeral Home, 712 S. Webster, Spring Hill, Kansas 66083 (913) 592-2244. Private family inurnment in Spring Hill Cemetery, Spring Hill, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hillside Community Lutheran Church, Spring Hill, Kansas. Virginia was born on a farm in Dumfries, Iowa on November 24, 1931 to Gerda D. and Hans H. Petersen. During her lifetime, she studied at colleges in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri. She married Donald R. Flanagan on October 11, 1953 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Virginia worked in the accounting field for a time before joining Shawnee Mission School District for 12 years. While there, she worked with Jr. High students in special education classes. Teaching swimming became a passion of Virginia’s. She helped at the YMCA, YWCA and Red Cross as well as educating people with arthritis to love the water. Virginia was a member of Hillside Community Lutheran Church, Spring Hill, Kansas. She was a child of God, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, teacher and friend.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; son Michael D. Flanagan, sister Esther Burck and brother Johnny R. Petersen, Council Bluffs, Iowa . She is survived by her husband Donald of the home; daughter Terri Flanagan, Spring Hill, Kansas; grandsons Mike II and Evan; great granddaughters Jessica and Katelyn; great grandsons Mike III, Christian, Corin and Hardin and many nieces and nephews.
