Obituary

Gone Fishing…Michael Shane Baker – beloved husband, father, son, brother, super uncle, friend, and nature enthusiast – returned to God on Sunday, February 7, 2021 at his home in De Soto, KS.

Born on October 5, 1978 to Mary and Richard Baker in Springfield, MO, Shane was known for his love of nature and the outdoors “since he was in diapers”. He attended Maur Hill Academy in Atchison, KS and was known there as “Nature Boy”. He continued his love of using God’s gift of nature by working with his hands throughout his adult life by building smoke shacks, boat barns, chicken coops, gardens, building motors…and the list goes on.

On January 18, 2006, he married Abby (nee Silverman), and together, they have 3 beautiful children.

Shane enjoyed everything outdoors; boating, fishing, hunting, gardening…He built rope swings & playhouses in the forest for his children; raised pigs, chickens & racoons; rescued many animals; whittled spears and bows & arrows from sticks; and taught all of us how to fish. Whatever he caught or hunted, he became “Chef Shane” and created the most amazing meals.

He will be greatly missed for his compassion, generosity, and immense love for God and his family. His children and his family were his greatest source of pride. He was an avid learner of everything, but mostly a patient teacher and mentor of outdoor life skills to everyone who knew him. He was a lover of Jesus and brought many people to God, perhaps his most impactful legacy.

Shane is survived by his wife, Abby of De Soto, KS; children Olivia (15), Avery (13), and Hank (5); his parents Mary and Richard; brother Matt Baker (Julie); sister Kathryn Baker Stewart (Adam); sister-in-law Heather Copeland (John); brother-in-law Scott Silverman (Elizabeth); nieces and nephews: Bryn, Hardy, Barrie, Banks, Mia, Millie and 3 on the way!...and many loving friends.

Shane will be missed so so much by all that knew him well and many of those that he just crossed paths with. His life was one of caring. Caring for those he loved. Caring for the world around him. Caring for all of those animal spirits that were always near. A gentle soul he had. A friend who could always brighten a room with his smile. A friend who always had a hug to give. We will miss you, Shane, but know please that you have left a mark on this planet in such a short time here.
With love, The Dworkins
