Obituary for Margie Lou Donovan
Margie Lou Donovan, 92, of Gardner, KS passed away Dec. 18, 2019 at Olathe Hospice House. Visitation will be held 11:30 am followed by the Service at 1:00 pm Sat., Dec. 28, 2019 at the First Baptist Church of Gardner, 324 E. Shawnee, Gardner, KS. Margie was born on March 12, 1927 to James William and Bertie Louella (Watkins) Hendricks in Salem, Missouri. As a child of the Great Depression she grew up on a farm where the family did not have much, but they had food and love and faith. She and the family moved to Gardner, Kansas around 1942 when her father took a job at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, originally called Sunflower Ordinance Works, near Desoto, Kansas. She graduated from Gardner High School in 1946. She was married to Ben Donovan from 1946 to 1968. Except for a few years, she worked outside the home in various secretarial and managerial positions until her retirement from IBM, Topeka, KS in 1991. Although she lived for short periods of her life in Pueblo, Colorado, Skagway, Alaska, and Topeka, Kansas, she always considered Gardner home and retired there in 1991. She found her church family at the First Baptist Church of Gardner. She was always active and was a member of the Silver Sneakers Exercise Program in Gardner until she was 90 years old. She kept busy quilting, sewing for family and friends, and doing her own yard work and gardening, but her family was her passion. All her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will miss her smile, her warmth, and her unconditional love.
Margie was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by children: Neila Donovan, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Mitchell Donovan, Wellsville, Kansas, Bradley (Robin) Donovan, Lambertville, Michigan, and Tracy (Kim) Donovan, Gardner; 10 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.
