Luanne was born April 8, 1943 in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii to Franklyn E. Skinner and Lucille Powell Skinner. She grew up in Hawaii and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1961. She attended The Lindenwood School for Girls in St. Charles, Missouri before settling in Long Beach, California. There she studied to become a trained Medical Assistant at Long Beach City College and worked for a general surgery practice. Luanne married Hobert U.V. “Duke” Scroggins in San Pedro, California on June 17, 1967. Together they raised a family of three children.
In 1999 Luanne and Duke moved to Gardner, Kansas to be near family. Luanne’s most favorite pastime was spending time with her four grandchildren. Many countless hours were spent teaching the art of making merengue pies, decorating hand-blown Easter eggs, teaching sewing and embroidery, making weekly gardening visits to Voigts, picking blackberries, fishing at Gardner Lake, watching the trains go through town, having her order taken at pretend restaurants set up in the living room, and reading an endless supply of books.
Education was very important to Luanne. Her father was the District Superintendent of Public Schools for Maui, Molokai and Lanai, Hawaii and her mother was an elementary school teacher. She proudly cheered each of her grandchildren’s high school graduations and enthusiastically supported them in college and work.
Service was important to Luanne as well. She was a Girl Scout leader and member of Lakewood First Presbyterian Church, where she served as Bible School teacher, Sunday School Education Director, Choir member and Deacon. She was also active in First Presbyterian Church of Gardner.
Luanne was a passionate fan of KU Basketball. She never missed a game and even traveled to Allen Fieldhouse to cheer the team as they prepared to leave for Big 12 and Final Four tournaments. Rock Chalk Jayhawk Go KU!
Luanne was preceded in death by her parents; husband Duke and brother Charles B. Skinner. She is survived by daughter Laura S. (Bill) Chauvin, Chandler, Arizona; step-children Darrow (Amy) Scroggins, Mesa, AZ and Denise (Tim) Ahearn, Yucaipa, CA; sister Nancy (John) Sharples, British Columbia, Canada; four grandchildren Hillary Chauvin, Hayden Chauvin, Hannah Chauvin, and Holly Chauvin as well as two step-grandchildren Matthew Merriman and Monica Phelps.
