Obituary for Louis Leland Penner

Louis Leland Penner, 94, De Soto, Kansas passed away Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Hillside Village of DeSoto. Visitation will be 12 Noon-1:30 p.m. Friday, March 3, 2023 with a Masonic Service at 1:30 p.m. before the Funeral Service at 2:00 p.m. at De Soto Methodist Church, 8760 Kill Creek Rd, De Soto, Kansas. Burial to follow at De Soto Cemetery, De Soto, Kansas. Please come dressed casually to honor Leland. Leland was born in De Soto, Kansas on October 30, 1928 to Louis Roscoe and Pansy Fay (Dent) Penner. He grew up in De Soto, graduating from De Soto High School in 1946. Leland was a United States Army Veteran, serving 1951-1953 during the Korean War. His occupations were many. He started building houses, hauled Ford cars, owned Penner Cycle Barn, De Soto and worked from 1953-1955 as a guard at Hercules Plant. He also farmed. Leland never backed away from work. He retired in March, 2017. Leland married Shirley Jean Christy on November 3, 1975 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Leland and Shirley loved to camp, in their later years in their motorhome. Leland enjoyed visiting Texas, Wyoming, Montana, Arizona, Colorado and South Dakota. He visited Sturgis, South Dakota four times. Leland was a member of De Soto Methodist Church, De Soto Masonic Lodge and a lifelong member of De Soto VFW Post 6654.

Leland was preceded in death by his parents; wife Shirley in 2017; son John Richard; sons-in-law Howard Funk and Michael Collins and a grandson. He is survived by his daughters Sheryl Sue Collins, Shawnee, Kansas and Gail Louise Funk, Lawrence, Kansas; son Paul Lee Penner and wife Cyndi, De Soto, Kansas; 9 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
