Obituary for Jimmy "Jim" Michael McKaig
Jimmy “Jim” Michael McKaig, 70, Bucyrus, Kansas passed away Saturday, March 6, 2021 at his home. A Prayer Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. with a visitation to follow at 6:15 p.m.-8:00 p.m., Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Bruce Funeral Home, 106 S. Center, Gardner, Kansas 66030 (913) 856-7111. Jim was born October 15, 1950 in Kansas City, Missouri to Arthur Vernon and Theora May (Meredith) McKaig. He graduated from Spring Hill High School in 1968 and then earned his BA Degree at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas. On January 4, 1984, Jim married Ilene Myer in Newton, Kansas. Jim worked for Broderson Manufacturing, Lenexa, Kansas as a heavy equipment assembler. Jim was a member of the Mill Creek Rifle Club. Jim became involved in competition pistol shooting in the late 70s, and became a nationally ranked competitor. He shot for 35 years at the Bullet Hole range most Friday nights. In 1984 he was invited to the US National Championship match for IPSC handgun shooting and finished 12th out of several hundred competitors. He also regularly competed in long range rifle competitions in later years, winning many shooting medals individually and in team events. In addition to the shooting sports, Jim enjoyed tennis, sailing, motorcycle riding, but his “pride and joy” was to watch his daughters in their athletic endeavors (figure skating and synchronized swimming).
Jim’s passion was building and working on home improvement projects. A life-long animal lover, Jim enjoyed the company of a long line of dogs, cats, and even the cattle on the family farm.
Working outdoors and chopping wood gave Jim pleasure, but most of all he loved being with his family.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Ilene of the home; daughters Elizabeth McKaig, Evansville, Indiana and Lt. Commander Meredith McKaig, Monterey, California and sisters Jane E. McKaig, Lenexa, Kansas and Catherine A. McKaig, Olathe, Kansas.
