Obituary for Dean Hulen Poynter

Dean Hulen Poynter, 87, of Overland Park, KS, passed away Feb. 20, 2020 at Sunrise of Overland Park. Graveside service with military honors will be held 1:00 pm Thur., Feb., 27, 2020 at Mayville Cemetery, Mayville, North Dakota. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc. or St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Olathe, KS. Dean was born June 1, 1932 in Stillwell, AR to Virgil and Molly (Yates) Poynter. He grew up in Arkansas where he graduated from Turrell High School, where he lettered in Basketball. Dean joined the US Air Force after graduation. He married Lois Corrine Wolden on Nov. 30, 1956 in Mayville, ND. They lived in Germany and Key West and Hilliard, FL, before moving to Olathe in 1970. Dean worked as an Air Traffic Control Supervisor in Olathe.; retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Dean enjoyed traveling, walking, fishing, and doing acts of kindness for family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois; five brothers: Elton, Dexter, Cecil, Doyle and Armil; sister, Ruby Bynum and grandson, Sean Reser. Dean is survived by his children: Jeff and wife Anita Poynter, The Villages, FL, Jaye Hragyil and fiancé Chris Scott, Homosassa, FL and Joni and husband Justin Doherty, Olathe, KS; eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
