Cole was born February 22, 1993 in Shawnee Mission, Kansas to Doug and Dana (Mattox) Broockerd. He grew up in Spring Hill, Kansas and graduated from Spring Hill High School in 2011. Cole earned his firefighting and paramedic training from JCCC in 2014. Cole began his career with Riley County EMS in Manhattan, Kansas before moving on to Lawrence Douglas Fire Medical, Station 4 in Lawrence, Kansas.

Cole married Amy Hess on March 27, 2020 at Hillsdale Presbyterian Church, where he was a member. The couple enjoyed sharing new experiences together through travel, and despite many changes to their wedding plans due to the pandemic and Cole’s diagnosis, their marriage was full of love and plenty of support from friends and family.

Cole had passion and skill for woodworking and leather work, with a meticulous eye for detail. He also never outgrew his love of building with Legos, passing on his enjoyment to his niece and nephew. Family and friends were very important to Cole, and he loved spending time tailgating with them at Chiefs and K-State football games, along with fishing and shooting, activities originally passed down to him by his dad.
Cole had a servant’s heart, always putting those he loved before himself. Cole put thought into every gift he gave, often creating unique, handmade items for his friends and family. He was courageous in the face of his medical treatments, and had a positive attitude, zest for life and sense of humor until his very last moments.

Cole is survived by his wife Amy; parents Doug and Dana; sister Katie Heiman and husband Jay, Spring Hill, Kansas; brothers Blake Broockerd and wife Alexandria, Shawnee, Kansas and Kyle Broockerd and wife Alison, Spring Hill, Kansas; niece Mattie Lou Broockerd, nephew William Heiman and one on the way.
