Chester Orville Galloway, 92, Olathe, Kansas passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2020. Memorial Services and an Inurnment will be at a later date in Longmont, Colorado due to the current world situation. Chester Orville Galloway was born on March 6, 1928 in Foss, Oklahoma. He was the ninth child born to Charles S. and Hazel I. (Thompson) Galloway.
He was valedictorian of his graduating class at Kalama (Washington) High School in 1946 where he was a 3-sport athlete and Eagle Scout. Chet joined the army in the fall of 1946 and was stationed in Japan at General MacArthur’s headquarters from 1946-1948. Following his discharge, he enrolled at Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho; in that close-knit community, he made lifelong friendships and determined that the call on his life was Christian education. Chet married his high school sweetheart, Mary Alyce Miller, in 1950. They graduated from college in 1952 and during the next few years, with the support and assistance of Mary Alyce, Chet earned three master’s degrees and a Ph.D.
Chet and Mary Alyce had two daughters, Sherry and Jan. In 1968, the family moved to Olathe, Kansas, where, for the next 25 years, Chet taught at Nazarene Theological Seminary and later became Academic Dean and, for a short time, served at Nazarene Headquarters in Kansas City. He wrote and contributed to several books and publications and was an expert in leadership training. After retiring in 1994, Chet began traveling around the world, teaching ministerial students in locations where there was limited access to higher education.
His family was precious to him and, especially after moving to Olathe, the family took summer vacations to visit extended family in Washington, camping and visiting national parks as they traveled. In later years, Chet and Mary Alyce regularly traveled between their daughters’ homes to take part in family activities. He loved jokes and puns and had a great sense of humor, and he enjoyed watching and participating in sports. Chet cared for Mary Alyce while she battled Parkinson’s disease until her death in 2017. In July 2019, he moved from his home into assisted living. He was hospitalized for pneumonia in February and passed away on March 17, 2020.
Chester is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Sherry and Richard Hannon of Olathe, Kansas and their children and grandchildren; his daughter and son-in-law Jan and Tim McIntire of Longmont, Colorado and their children; his brother Auburn Galloway; and many nieces and nephews.
