Obituary for Charles "Charlie" Leroy Compton

Charles “Charlie” Leroy Compton, 77, Wellsville, Kansas passed away at his home on Saturday, August 20, 2022.

Charlie was born in Nevada, Missouri on January 13, 1945 to Lefo and Louise Mary (Cashier) Compton. He grew up in Nevada, Missouri moving to Olathe in later years.  Charlie joined the Army in 1967 and served until joining the National Guard in 1971.

He married the love of his life, Phronsie Kay Cowick on May 20, 1967 in Kansas City, MO.  His wife, Phronsie was the second oldest of 10 kids so Charlie and Phronsie spent lots of time helping out.  Charlie and Phronsie lived in several places, from Colorado to MO, and eventually built their dream home of 30 years in Wellsville, KS.

Charlie worked at General Motors at the Fairfax plant in Kansas City, KS.  He was a UAW member.  After 30 years he retired as a team leader.  Charlie remained faithful to GM and American made cars his entire life, and you would find only GM trucks and cars in his garage.  He would always direct his family and friends to BUY AMERICAN.

Phronsie and Charlie did everything together.  They were best friends and took care of each other every day.  Charlie and Phronsie were Kansas State Champion Crappie Fishers for many years. They spent lots of time traveling to Sport Shows and were the celebrity sponsors for various fishing rods and reels.  In their “free time” they would garden on their 5-acre property and were seen on a regular basis on their “his and her” tractors out in the yard.  Charlie was an avid card player and he and Phronsie visited the Wellsville City Library frequently.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Richard. He is survived by his wife Phronsie, sister Dee Montgomery of Kansas City, Kansas and many nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be held on September 1st from 2pm to 3:30pm at Bruce’s Funeral Home in Gardner KS. Contributions in Memory of Charles Compton may be made to Wellsville City Library. Condolences may be left at www.brucefuneralhome.com
