Obituary for Arvelda Pearl Smith (Calder)

 

Arvelda Pearl Calder Smith, 88, Gardner, Kansas passed away Friday, December 2, 2022 at Spring Hill Care & Rehab, Spring Hill, Kansas.  Graveside service will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at Antioch Cemetery, 22668 S. Waverly Rd, Spring Hill, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to Gardner Friends Church, Gardner, Kansas. Condolences may be left at www.brucefuneralhome.com

Arvelda was born in rural Edgerton, Kansas on August 15, 1934.  Her parents were William Peter and Pearl Dorothy (Gnase) Calder. She grew up in Edgerton and graduated from Edgerton High School in 1952. Arvelda attended Kansas City College of Commerce. She worked for Emory Byrd, Sears and Sunflower Ammunition Plant. On May 1, 1954,  Arvelda married Jay Arnold Smith in Paola, Kansas.  She was a homemaker who enjoyed raising her family. She was a talented seamstress. Arvelda played the piano for the Gardner Friends Church, where she was a member.  Arvelda was a lifelong Johnson County resident.

Arvelda was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jay and brothers William Earl Calder and Eldon Eugene Calder. She is survived by her daughters Gail Slavens, Gardner, Kansas and Phyllis (Bob) Bailey, Linn Valley, Kansas; son Brad (Anita) Smith, Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
