Obituary for Alva "Dean" Moore

Alva Dean Moore, 96, formerly of Gardner, Kansas passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at Addington Place, Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Private family graveside service will be Monday, April 20, 2020 at Gardner Cemetery, Gardner, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 138 E. Shawnee Street, Gardner, Kansas 66030 or Kindred Hospice 4911 S. Arrowhead Dr. #310 Independence, Missouri 64055. Dean was born on September 26, 1923 in rural Gardner, Kansas to Frank Miller Moore and Lottie Jane (Hoffine) Moore. He grew up in Gardner and graduated from Gardner High School in 1941. Dean attended Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana, Indiana State University, Terre Haute, Indiana and Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas for his education. He served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during WWII as a Commanding Officer of USS APc44. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and served with Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron 885. Dean married Dorothy Ann Wolf in Gardner, Kansas on September 17, 1944. Dean was a respected member of the community, serving on Gardner city council as well as the Johnson County Airport Commission (1977-1984), Board of Directors of the Farmers Bank (1967-1984) and Reese Hospital, Gardner, Kansas. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and Gardner First Presbyterian Church serving as an elder, Sunday school teacher and on numerous committees. Dean was a member since WWII and past Commander of American Legion Le Roy Hill Post #19, Gardner, Kansas. He was a partner in the firm of Gault, Moore and Stevens, Consulting Engineers, Gardner, Kansas when the firm began in 1955. He worked as a partner or principal for succeeding consulting engineering firms in Gardner until 1984, at which time he moved to Vancouver, Washington to manage the automated mapping operation for Pacific Telecom, Inc. Dean retired from Pacific Telecom, Inc in 1992 and he and Dottie moved to Lee’s Summit, Missouri in 1995. He enjoyed genealogy and photography. As a private pilot, he also enjoyed flying. He will be dearly missed.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; wife Dorothy who died November 10, 2007; son Stephen Moore; siblings Lois Herman and Raymond” Jack” Moore and brother-in-law Dick Gieringer. He is survived by son James “Jim” Moore and wife Sharon, Pleasant Hill, Missouri; daughter-in-law Julie Kay Moore Owyang and husband Rev. Jerry, Orange, California; sister Mary Jane Gieringer, Olathe, Kansas and twin brother Alvin Gene Moore and wife Melba, Ocala, Florida; grandchildren Kelly Moore of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, Michael Moore and wife Valli of Fort Belvoir, Virginia; two great grandchildren Zoe Grace and Trinity Skye along with many nieces and nephews.
