He was born May 23, 1929, to Arthur Edward Jensen and Rachel Frances (Strong) Jensen, Olathe, KS. Arthur’s true love was raising cattle, an interest he obtained from working his parents’ dairy, Olathe View Dairy, along with his older brother George Jens Jensen. He showed the family dairy cattle earning top honors in Waterloo, Iowa, several years in a row at the largest dairy show in the nation.
Arthur was drafted into the Army during the Korean War and served in Korea. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 11, 1952. Upon his return from the war he continued work on the family dairy farm until a silage wagon fell on his back and doctors said he would never walk again. This prompted his father to sell the dairy herd against Arthur’s desire as he said he would indeed walk again. Anyone who knew Arthur would not have doubted him; he was known as a strong and hard-headed individual that could move anything he could get his arms around.
After his father sold the dairy herd Arthur went to work delivering milk for Adams Dairy. Later he became a farrier and was sought out for his ability to hot shoe horses. In addition, he became a pipefitter working out of Local Union 533.
The desire to raise cattle would once again pull at him when he and his father would become some of the early breeders of Simmental cattle in America. He continued to raise full blood Fleckvieh Simmental until his passing. Those of you who knew him know that these last couple of years were like a prison to him as he was physically unable to get outside and be with his cattle. His passing has once again set him free.
Arthur married Sharleen Elizabeth Stewart of Gardner, Kansas, and together they raised four children: Derrick Nelson Jensen, Barbara Gayle Jensen of Denver, CO, Arleen Frances Jensen (Jack) Slayman of Olathe, KS, and Steven Arthur Jensen (Bonnie) of Osawatomie, KS. He is predeceased by his parents and son Derrick, who passed away April 2017 of ALS, and his brother George. He leaves six grandchildren, Christian Nicolo Jensen, Michael Connor Jensen, Brian Chance Jensen, Seth Thomas Slayman, Davis Gantt Jensen, and Samuel Jensen Silverman.
Arthur was a member of the Adballah Shriners, Gardner Masonic Lodge, Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) and American Legion. Arthur belonged to The Elks Club, the Saddle Club, all of Olathe, KS, Kansas Simmental Association, and American Simmental Association among others.
